Austria Adventure Tour 7 Day Itinerary

Here’s what to do for a week long adventure in Austria.  This is Active Adventure’s tour itinerary.

Note that the tour starts and ends in Munich, Germany, so if you have time, be sure to allow a few days on either end to explore that cool city!

DAY ONE:  Pick up in Munich and head directly to Austria.  After lunch, bike past 14,000-year-old glacier-carved gorges via Kaprun to Zell am See.  Go sledding, and maybe take a brisk dip in the lake! Biking: 22.5-35 kilometers (14-21.75 miles), easy to moderate

DAY TWO: Take a cable ride to the Schmittenhöhe for spectacular views.  After a hike lunch,  take the cable down, or optionally, you can paraglide!!!  Explore Zell am See in the afternoon by foot or bike.  Hiking: 4.8-11.2 kilometers (3-7 miles), easy to moderate

DAY THREE: White water raft the Salzach River.  After lunch, bike to the quaint village of Werfen, complete with a castle!  Rafting: Class II & III rapids, 2.5 hours, easy   Biking: 12.8 or 24 kilometers (8 or 15 miles), mostly flat

DAY FOUR: Explore UNESCO world heritage site of Hallstatt to discover the historical salt mines while sliding down wooded slides like miners once did. Kayak through the calm waters of the Hallstätter See.  Kayaking: 1.5 hours, easy

DAY FIVE:   A tour of the Hohenwefen castle and a possible falconry exhibition.  Then ride along the Salzach River, past flower-decked houses, and the Gollinger Waterfall. Meander along the tree-lined trails, eventually arriving in Salzburg.

DAY SIX:  A guided walking tour of Salzburg in the morning, then a free afternoon to explore the city.  Consider an easy bike ride along the Salzach River to the Hellbrunn palace.  Farewell dinner. Biking: Up to 67 kilometers (Up to 39 miles)

DAY SEVEN: After breakfast, return to Munich unless you decide to stay on or prefer to be dropped at the airport.

Most meals included:  see itinerary for details.  Don’t forget to use my $200 Off promo code (email me for it).

When to Visit Austria

The best time to visit Austria for summer time activities, like hiking, biking and paddling, is from mid-June to August.   During the winter, Austria offers plenty of skiing and winter sports.

Who Can Go on the Multi-Activity Austria Adventure

This itinerary, while very active, is also just a Difficulty Level 2 out of 5, so any reasonably fit person can do it.  This makes it a perfect multi-generational trip, for those younger and older who may not be able to do some of the more rigorous adventures covered on this podcast and website.

It’s also a great trip for couple, friends or solo travelers as in the small group setting, you will quickly bond with the other guests.  And if you’ve never tried an adventure vacation, this is the perfect trip to dip your toes in (I promise you will get hooked like the rest of us!).

TIP:  Active Adventures offers ‘Adult Only’ and ‘Family’ group trips to Austria so you can choose the right group for your situation.

The Best Way to Get to Austria

This particular tour starts in Munich, which is an easy international airport to get in and out of, and has an abundance of direct flights.

The cheapest way to get to Munich is to simply get to Europe on the best fare that you can find, and then you can take a cheap flight to Munich (and maybe get a second ‘vacation’ out of it by staying in Amsterdam, or wherever your cheap flight takes you).  Instead of flying, taking the train can be a fun option, if you want to see the sites along the way.

Active Adventures is my highly recommended affiliate (email me for a $200 OFF Promo Code – they won’t let me publish it).  I have personally gone on five of their tours and have interviewed dozens of former guests.  We all agree:  this is the company to go with if you want a super fun, adventurous holiday with like-mided folks, generally aged 50+.  For more family friendly tours, check out their sister company Austin Adventures.  Both companies offer this tour, so you can choose the ‘Adult only’ or ‘Family’ trip!  The promo code works for both.
