The Amsterdam to Bruges bike & barge tour is one of Europe’s most rewarding active travel experiences. Over eight unforgettable days, you’ll cycle flat scenic routes through the Netherlands and Belgium, cruise historic waterways aboard a comfortable floating hotel, and explore medieval cities like Amsterdam, Antwerp, Ghent, and Bruges — all without ever unpacking more than once.

Why Choose an Amsterdam to Bruges Bike & Barge Tour?

If you’ve ever dreamed of cycling through Holland’s windmill-dotted countryside and Belgium’s storybook towns — but prefer comfort over camping — this bike and barge tour delivers the perfect balance of adventure and ease. By day, you ride quiet, car-free paths. By evening, you relax aboard your floating hotel as it cruises to your next destination – and sometimes get to wander popular historic areas after the cruise ships have departed.

The Best of Holland and Belgium by Bike

Each day of my recommended 8 day/7 night barge and bike tour, you get a chance to explore delightful villages, stunning scenery and visit historic, often UNESCO World Heritage sites. You’ll enjoy sailing rivers and canals and have the opportunity to meet locals away from busy, touristy areas.

Unpack Once, Travel Effortlessly

One of my favorite things about taking a boat and bike tour, is that you only have to unpack ONCE!  So not only does this make your travel go smoother, you are not wasting your precious vacation time packing and unpacking, and then taking time to get to and from the transportation center, because your hotel – the luxury barge – moves with you!

Travel is often after breakfast, so you can enjoy your morning beverage watching the sights along the rivers and canals, before you head out on that day’s cycling adventure.

Flexibility : You Can Cycle with the Group or Enjoy the Ship

A boat and bike (barge and boat) tour is a perfect solution for traveling partners with mis-matched ideas of adventure.  Let’s say you are more active than your partner.  You partner can rent an e-Bike instead of a manual bike.  Or he or she can skip cycling that day and simply enjoy sailing with the ship!  If the ship is docked, perhaps a walk or ride into the village would be fun.  Virtually every couple I have interviewed with an ‘adventure mismatch’ (it’s always been where the husband was a couch potato), the husband not only enjoyed this way of traveling, but he agreed to go on another one!

What Is It Like to Cycle from Amsterdam to Bruges?

Cycling from Amsterdam to Bruges is surprisingly accessible. The terrain is famously flat, the bike paths are wide and well-marked, and daily distances are manageable for recreational riders. Most days range from 15 to 35 miles, with optional e-bikes available for extra support.

Unless you cycle regularly, I recommend getting an e-Bike so you can control how hard you want to pedal (you still have to work, albeit at varying efforts, with e-Bikes).  Also, wind along the coast can make cycling more challenging.  An e-Bike gives you options.  Around half of the passengers these days rent e-Bikes.

Daily Mileage and Difficulty Level

Your can start your adventure from Amsterdam or Bruges, as the barge goes back and forth each week.  Many days, you can chose to ride a shorter or longer milage.  This means if you feel like relaxing on the ship: fine.  Or if the weather isn’t to your liking, you can take the shorter (or no ride).

See below for the planned daily mileage.  Note that this tour can start or end in Amsterdam, depending on the week as the barge goes back and forth weekly to Bruge.  If two milages are listed, that means that you will have the opportunity to do the shorter or longer ride, depending on your mood and the weather.  Of course, you can always just sail along with the ship!

Day-by-Day Amsterdam to Bruges Bike & Barge Itinerary

Day 1 – Amsterdam → Utrecht

Cycling distance: Warm up ride only to test your bike

Arrive in vibrant Amsterdam and board your floating hotel before cruising south along the scenic Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. After a short warm-up ride through peaceful Dutch countryside, settle into life aboard the barge and toast the start of your adventure in the charming riverside town of Vianen.

Day 2: Utrecht – Vreeswijk  | Vreeswijk – Schoonhoven – Kinderdijk  – Dordrecht

Cycling distance: (32 km/19 mi. or 56 km/34 mi.)

After breakfast, the barge cruises to Vreeswijk where your ride begins along winding rivers, quaint villages, and historic canal locks in the heart of the Dutch countryside. The day’s highlight is the UNESCO-listed windmills of Kinderdijkbefore hopping on a quick Waterbus ferry to the historic city of Dordrecht, one of the oldest towns in the Netherlands.

Day 3 – Dordrecht → Tholen

Cycling distance: (42 km/26 mi. or 50 km/31 mi.)

After breakfast, the barge sails to Willemstad, a beautifully preserved fortified town where your ride begins along scenic waterways and through the historic Zeeland landscape. Cycle through the former island of Tholen before arriving in the charming medieval town of Bergen op Zoom, where centuries-old streets, lively squares, and grand monuments reveal a rich 800-year history.

Day 4 – Tholen → Antwerp

Cycling distance: (21 km/13 mi. or 35 km/21 mi.)

Enjoy a morning ride through the tranquil forests of Wouwse Plantage near Bergen op Zoom before rejoining the barge for a scenic cruise to Antwerp. This vibrant riverfront city is famous for its diamond trade, grand Renaissance architecture, and landmarks like the Grote Markt and Cathedral of Our Lady, with the evening free to explore its lively restaurants and historic streets.

Day 5 – Antwerp  — Temse → Sint-Amands

Cycling distance: (34 km/21 mi. or 49 km/31 mi.)

This morning’s ride leaves Antwerp along one of the most scenic stretches of the Scheldt River, where peaceful riverbanks and wide-open Flemish landscapes create some of the most beautiful cycling of the trip. The day ends in the quiet riverside town of Sint-Amands, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Scheldt valley.

Day 6 – Sint-Amands — Dendermonde → Ghent

Cycling distance: (52 km/32 mi.)

Continue cycling along the scenic Scheldt River into the vibrant medieval city of Ghent, where centuries of history meet lively university-town energy. After arriving, explore Ghent’s canals, towering belfry, and magnificent St. Bavo Cathedral—home to Van Eyck’s famed Adoration of the Mystic Lamb—before enjoying a guided canal cruise through the heart of the historic city.

Day 7 – Ghent → Bruges

Cycling distance: (22 km/13 mi. or 45 km/28 mi.)

Today’s ride winds through the peaceful countryside of western Flanders to the fairy-tale canals and cobbled streets of Bruges, often called the “Venice of the North.” This beautifully preserved UNESCO-listed city is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, where Gothic buildings, scenic canals, and lively cafés create one of Europe’s most enchanting destinations.

Day 8 – Departure from Bruges

After breakfast aboard the barge, it’s time to say farewell to your fellow cyclists and crew. If time allows, enjoy a final stroll through Bruges’ charming old town before continuing your travels.

Self-Guided or Fully Guided Options

On many of the Netherlands bike and barge tours, you can choose to ride with the experienced guide and your group, or you can use the app to ride on your own.  Each day, your guide will post on a white board on the ship the time of the ship’s departure.  You just need to make sure you are back on board by then.

Life Aboard the Barge

One of the greatest joys of a bike and barge tour is the comfort of returning each evening to your floating hotel. Your cabin includes a private bathroom, daily meals are prepared onboard, and the lounge and sun deck offer the perfect place to unwind after a scenic ride.

Cabins and Comfort

Compact but comfortable is the best way to describe them.  Each cabin has two single beds and a private bath with shower.  I found there to be ample storage room in a cupboard and under the bed.  And I thought the bathroom was larger than I anticipated.  You have daily housekeeping service.  There is no laundry service on the ship, so plan to wash in the sink and hang to dry, or pack accordingly.

Meals and Onboard Atmosphere

Social, relaxed, communal dining plus areas outside to relax and watch the scenery go by.

The barge can hold 20 – 40 people (depending on the ship), so you will get an opportunity to meet lots of new people from around the world (mostly English speaking in my experience : USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand guests are typical).   This means the group is large enough for a variety of fun connections and conversations, but small enough that you will have a chance to get to know everyone.  It is not uncommoon for lifetime friendships to form!

Your guides will speak – at a minimum – English and German.

Highlights Along the Route

From iconic Dutch windmills to Belgium’s medieval masterpieces, the Amsterdam to Bruges route is packed with cultural and scenic highlights.  One highlight is the strikingly beautiful tidal Schelde River.

Guests also get a kick out of the ‘Water Buses’ (see above) that take cyclists around the cities.  The massive cycle garages with their self bike tire cleaning scrubbers are a novelty hit as well!

Your BoatBikeTours.com tour also includes entrance fees to several iconic treasures along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is the Amsterdam to Bruges bike tour difficult?  This tour is FLAT, and is rated a Level 1: easy.

  • Do I need to be experienced?  You should be comfortable on a bike.  For me, I need to ‘condition’ my bottom prior to the trip.  Pack padded shorts (maybe even a padded seat if you are sensitive like I am).  Train enough so that you are comfortable sitting on the saddle 4-5 hours a day, for several days in a row.  Remember that there are LOTS of stops, and it is a leisurely cycle holiday, not hard core.

  • Are e-bikes available? Yes!  Make sure to reserve one when you book your tour.
